Colossians Bible Study - Chapter 2

Mon, Feb 04, 2008

Please join us in our Weekly Bible Study.
First read the Bible text in the box in Column 1, then think about it as you review the corresponding teaching comments in Column 2.   In this manner, move down and complete the whole Chapter.  All Bible text is from the New International Version.

Colossians Chapter 2 -- verses 1-5

I want you to know how much I am struggling for you and for those at Laodicea, and for all who have not met me personally.  My purpose is that they may be encouraged in heart and united in love, so that they may have the full riches of complete understanding, in order that they may know the mystery of God, namely, Christ,  in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.

I tell you this so that no one may deceive you by fine-sounding arguments.  For though I am absent from you in body, I am present with you in spirit and delight to see how orderly you are and how firm your faith in Christ is.

The complete superiority of Christ should be fully understood. Embodied in Jesus Christ are all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge, and God has put this treasure within you and me by His Holy Spirit.

Don't be deceived by anyone who wants to add to the completed work of Christ.

Freedom From Human Regulations Through Life With Christ -- verses 6-23

So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.

See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the basic principles of this world rather than on Christ.

For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form, and you have been given fullness in Christ, who is the head over every power and authority. In him you were also circumcised, in the putting off of the sinful nature, not with a circumcision done by the hands of men but with the circumcision done by Christ, having been buried with him in baptism and raised with him through your faith in the power of God, who raised him from the dead.

When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your sinful nature,God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins, having canceled the written code, with its regulations, that was against us and that stood opposed to us; he took it away, nailing it to the cross. And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.

Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day.  These are a shadow of the things that were to come; the reality, however, is found in Christ.  Do not let anyone who delights in false humility and the worship of angels disqualify you for the prize. Such a person goes into great detail about what he has seen, and his unspiritual mind puffs him up with idle notions. He has lost connection with the Head, from whom the whole body, supported and held together by its ligaments and sinews, grows as God causes it to grow.

Since you died with Christ to the basic principles of this world, why, as though you still belonged to it, do you submit to its rules:  "Do not handle! Do not taste! Do not touch!"?  These are all destined to perish with use, because they are based on human commands and teachings.  Such regulations indeed have an appearance of wisdom, with their self-imposed worship, their false humility and their harsh treatment of the body, but they lack any value in restraining sensual indulgence.

We all received Jesus as Lord by faith.  Likewise, we must continue to live in and with Jesus by that same faith. We can't add-on to his perfection.  Rather, we need to let him expresses his full life in and through us.  Do you believe it?

Forget about the traditions of man, or the thought that "I can do it my way."  These old ideas never worked in the past, and won't work now.

Christ is fully God.  And he has taken up residence in you fully by His Spirit. This residence began at baptism, but not the superficial circumcision and baptism done by men--but real, total, spiritual change brought about by Christ himself.  You have been joined with him in his death, burial and resurrection by the power of God.
When we were still dead in our sins, God made us alive with Christ.  Here is what he did:
1- Forgave us all our sins.
2- Canceled the Law which stood against us.
3- Disarmed any who would condemn us.
4- Triumphed over this world by the finished work of the Jesus' cross.

Repeat:  God has rescued us from Satan’s kingdom of darkness and delivered us into Jesus’ kingdom of Light. Through Jesus, we have been restored to a right relationship with God having been forgiven for all our sins. This forgiveness has already been granted based upon the finished work of Jesus. If you are a Christian, you do not have to keep pleading for God to forgive you.  God has already forgiven you for every one of your sins (past, present and future) based upon the completed work of Jesus on the cross 2000 years ago. You are forgiven.

In our new relationship with Christ, we have His Holy Spirit living within us, telling us what to do and say, and giving us power to live.  The "outside" rules and regulations of the world are not only unnecessary, but lack any real value.  We are now learning to trust the Holy Spirit to teach us how to love God with all our heart, and how to love our neighbor as ourselves.  This loving relationship replaces outside rules with the Lordship of Christ in our lives.
Personal Application

What does this Chapter say to me today?  How does it impact the way I think and live? Am I following outside rules, or the Lordship of Jesus?

Do I have real faith or phoney faith?  Can I be sure?  What is a Christian, anyway?
